  1. FYI Steve, we retain the french "re" endings of words because it adds additional nuance to the language. That's something most Americans simply don't understand. For example, a "meter" is a thing for measuring other things! While a "metre" is a universal standard unit of distance. So, in English a "kilometer", is actually a device for measuring kilos — something we ordinarily call "scales". Whereas a "kilometre" is 1,000 metres! Do you understand? "Mitre" is the French-derived word for angled cut, and we retain the "re" ending to indicate its origin within the language, and to distinguish it from the word "miter" which would be used to describe a person who does something with mites. 😛

You might imagine that American English is a bit smarter than English-English, because it uses simpler endings for some words. But it isn't. It's just as stupid as English-English, except it's stupid in slightly more useless ways. 😛

  2. Hi Steve,
thank you for the great video. I watched it couple of times.
What do you think about combi (miter+table) saws? one example is Bosch GTM 12JL

  3. Mostly a good video. However, I have had a Makita 14 inch miter saw for 30 plus years. And you speak only to right handed people. Lefties work from the other side quite often.

  4. As the new owner of my first Compound Mitre saw this is helpful. Only addition I would make is how to make trench cuts, using a sacrificial length of wood similar to the long stop block example to offset the curve of the blade and achieve a straight trench cut line.

  5. I need to cut a really long piece of melamine board with mitered corners. I want to make it a desk top meeting in a corner. Is this the kind of saw I will need?

  6. Good information, however, I had to laugh when you failed to let the blade stop turning before raising it from the cut wood (like most of us would), which happened several times following your warning not to do that.

  7. Great presentation Steve…well done. There was no mention of the use of lasers to assist in the alignment of the workpiece to the blade. In Europe many saws have them. You mentioned you have never needed to do any compound cuts…..if you have any followers who do roofing jobs, you will need to do compound cuts for jack rafters etc. Keep up the good work.

  8. Great video sir. I just purchased my first miter saw and this video made me feel a whole lot better. Thank you.
