DIY Black Walnut Bench | Evening Woodworker

This is my black walnut bench build. The goals here were strong, sturdy, and eye-catching. This shows the steps for how I built it. This bench also features a castle joint at each of the four corners. Hope you enjoy it!

  1. This is amazing!! I cracked up at the comment on compromise with the wife! They once say there was a man and his wife during Christmas…the wife wanted a Christmas tree in every single room. The husband responded "no, that's ridiculous, one is enough!". They argued and argued until eventually they compromised and placed a Christmas tree in every room!

In all seriousness, this is motivational. I'm just about to embark on this evening woodworking, single side of double garage setup! I'd love any tips or advice or maybe you could make a video with something like this regarding your advice on tools that are necessary and garage layouts!

  2. Nice work! I like the contrast very much. Can you please add in the description the finishing oil infos? Or just reply me. Thanks!

  3. Just found your channel! What state are you from? I really like the bathtub cabinets you made! I might be copying that! 👍👍

  4. Excellent looking bench.

But I'm a bit concerned about the slots for the tabletop fasteners. The top will expand and contract very little along the grain so the slots in the long sides don't need to be very long. The slots in the short sides should be the elongated ones as the fasteners will move side-to-side with expansion and contraction. It looks like you may have spaced the fasteners back a bit from the long sides to allow them to move in and out (which is how they will move), so those slots can be shorter.

In any event the top isn't all that wide so you're probably OK. But you might consider making the slots in the short sides maybe 50% wider.
