Should You Buy a CNC? In this episode I go over my experience, as a woodworker / furniture maker and how I use a CNC. I will cover my history, how my opinions have changed, the main things I utilize my CNC for, the basic skills needed to use one, and ultimately if I think a CNC is worth buying.

  1. Any of these using belt drives and small setepper line the smaller to mid range nema 13 steppers running grbl isnt worth having. At least move up to lead screws and small Nema 34 steppers. Also be aware of one fact, you get what you pay for. For the bets price performance the sharks.next wave are hard to beat. Considere your real needs first to size one. No mater how big a cnc, even one that can reduce an entire sheet 0f 3/4 oak to chips you will allwys need a bigger one now and them.. 🙂 heheh

  2. Really inspirational.

I pondered for some time now whether or not to purchase a CNC Router.

This definitely help me make up my mind to go for it.

    Thank you.

ps. I love the CNC you later part …

  3. I recently bought a mini CNC machine. Just a 3018 variation. The biggest thing I've learned is that just because it's computer controlled, doesn't mean you never have to work hard ever again. Turns out there's a lot of variables that go into making a quality carving.

  4. Sorry, don't listen to this guy. First off a real CNC, one that you can actually use for professional work used is 30k plus, new 50k-150k. Also not drilling and cutting you outlines out with the cnc is insane. If your using the cnc the way he is your better off printing out the object on paper and spray gluing it on. I am only commenting on this because if you followed his advice you would think cnc's are a waist of time, which they are not. I was supposed to stop watching because I am professional, and a cnc expert. The fact that he start the video by saying "I am not expert stop watching if you are" is also a red flag. Hey buddy if your not a cnc expert don't make a video advising people on cnc work

  5. Hello from U K. I am 80 yrs old and try to self teaching woodworking in my retirement. Learning the new terminology [looking for what it means, like what is end grain and all. Would love to see YouTube how to lift heavy planks on the table as I am a slight woman. Love your videos. Pl don't stop ever posting- Your new admirer…

  6. Chris, thanks for the valuable insights. If I may suggest, a great sequel to this video could be comparing a desktop cnc to the handheld shaper origin. Hard to decide which one is worth the investment.

  7. What does a 3 axis cnc router allow you to do?… just come across the term… not come across cnc routers before.

  8. I would love to get one of those push sticks! Any chance on you releasing the file or possibly selling?

  9. Good video. I have been considering getting into CNC for years but as you said early in the video I don't want or more precisely I can't afford to drop $5000 – $15000 on a CNC machine. I considered building my own but I'm a bit intimidated by sourcing to electronics and getting it to work. I quite like the look of the X carve and I could probably stretch to that price point. Have you ever done any 3D carving with it or have you just used it for cutting out shapes. If so how good is it for 3D carving?

  10. I was a field service engineer for Mazak so when I retired I was bored and made two CNC machines one used ball screws for all the axis. I decided to do it again and used bike chains on all the axis except for Z and the bed on it was 4' x 8'. I got bored with it and sold it. That was 15 years ago. I watched your youtube video and the brain started again.
